A leading global pharmaceutical company needed its digital detailing presentation to work in more than one market. Delivered through an agency partner, our work was to build an interactive, iPad-based eDetailer for field sales representatives, and to keep that experience consistent as it was localized into multiple languages.
This Veeva CLM eDetailer case study covers what the challenge was, what we built, how we approached the technical and compliance constraints, and what was delivered.
The challenge
Localizing a digital detailing experience is rarely a matter of swapping text. For this project, moving into multiple languages and markets added new slides and new content variations. Every addition had to sit inside the same presentation without breaking what already worked.
The key challenge was keeping four things consistent across every localized version:
- Design — the same visual language and layout discipline, even where translated copy or extra content changed how a slide was filled.
- Navigation — reps needed to move through the presentation the same way in every market.
- Interactivity — charts, popups, overlays and multimedia had to behave the same way.
- Performance — the presentation had to stay smooth on iPad, regardless of which version was loaded.
On top of that, the work carried the usual constraints of pharma digital content:
- MLR/compliance-approved content had to be implemented accurately.
- Existing approved content had to be converted into a digital, interactive experience.
- The content had to be packaged according to the technical constraints of Veeva CLM and IREP.
- Different interactive states, popups, navigation paths and multimedia had to be handled reliably.
What we built
We developed an interactive iPad-based eDetailer — a digital presentation designed for sales representatives to use during their presentations. It included:
- Multiple interactive content screens and slides, organised into sections.
- Swipe-based navigation, so reps could move through the presentation naturally on a touch device.
- Smooth navigation between sections of the presentation.
- Interactive charts and visual elements to present information visually rather than as static pages.
- Popup and overlay information, giving access to additional detail on demand.
- Embedded multimedia and video content within the presentation.
- References and supporting content, accessible from within the presentation.
- A touch-optimised iPad experience throughout.
- A Veeva CLM-compatible implementation, with IREP and Salesforce integration.
The overall aim was practical: give sales representatives quick access to relevant information during a presentation, without having to leave the flow of the conversation to find it.
How we delivered it
Technology
The eDetailer was built with HTML5, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery, using animation and interactive web technologies suited to iPad-based digital detailing. It was implemented for Veeva CLM, with IREP and Salesforce integration, and localized for different languages and multiple markets.
A modular structure
The core of our approach was to structure the content into modular interactive components rather than building each slide as a one-off. Charts, popups and overlays, navigation, references and multimedia were each treated as reusable pieces.
This choice was aimed squarely at the localization challenge. With new slides and content variations coming from different languages and markets, building them from a shared set of components was our way of addressing consistency in design, navigation and interactivity across the localized versions. We cover the wider considerations in our guide to eDetailer localization for Veeva CLM across multiple markets.
Converting approved content
The source material was MLR/compliance-approved, so our job was to convert it into an interactive experience accurately rather than reinterpret it. That approved content was structured into the same modular interactive components used across the rest of the build. For more on how review fits into this kind of project, see our article on the eDetailer MLR review process.
Validating performance and compatibility
Interactive content on iPad needs to stay smooth, and CLM content needs to respect the packaging rules of the platforms it runs on. We validated iPad performance and Veeva CLM compatibility as part of development and testing. That covered the different interactive states, popups, navigation and multimedia that had to work reliably within the presentation.
The content was packaged to work within the technical constraints of Veeva CLM and IREP. If your presentation also needs to run on more than one platform, our guide to IREP eDetailer development across multiple CRMs explains the approach in more detail.
The result
The project delivered an interactive, touch-optimised iPad eDetailer for a leading global pharmaceutical company, with:
- A Veeva CLM-compatible implementation
- IREP and Salesforce integration
- Localization for different languages and multiple markets
- Swipe navigation, interactive charts, popups and overlays, embedded video, and references within one presentation
- A modular component structure, with iPad performance and Veeva CLM compatibility validated through development and testing
The presentation was designed to give sales representatives quick access to relevant information while presenting.
